Advice from Pureflo

Cold radiators: what the pattern can tell you.

A cold patch is a clue, not a diagnosis. These simple observations help explain the problem when you arrange a heating assessment.

Start with the pattern

Is one radiator affected, a group of radiators or the entire home? Does the problem happen every time the heating runs, or only occasionally? Is the hot water still working normally?

Those distinctions are useful when arranging heating repairs. Write them down before calling, along with when you first noticed the problem and whether any recent work was carried out.

Cold at the top, bottom or everywhere

Different patterns can point towards different issues. Worcester Bosch explains that a cold upper section can be associated with trapped air, while a cold lower section can be associated with deposits or poor circulation. Neither observation establishes the cause in your home on its own. See the manufacturer’s radiator guidance.

A radiator that is cold throughout may require a different investigation from one that is only partly warming. Tell the engineer which pattern you have noticed rather than assuming that a flush, a new valve or a replacement radiator is definitely needed.

Check information, not internal components

You can note the thermostat setting, the timer programme and any visible error message. Use the appliance’s own user instructions for any user-level checks. Photograph the display if that is easier than writing down a code.

Do not remove boiler covers, alter safety devices or repeatedly reset equipment outside its instructions. If you are not confident carrying out a permitted user check, leave it and ask for advice. Take care around hot surfaces and do not touch a radiator simply to test how hot it is.

Why power flushing is not the first answer to everything

Power flushing may be appropriate where contamination is affecting a suitable heating system. A control problem, failed component or another fault may need a different repair.

An assessment should establish what treatment is justified and whether the system is suitable. Our power flushing guide explains useful questions about scope and limitations. No cleaning method comes with a blanket promise to cure every heating problem.

Have these details ready

  • The property postcode and whether heating is available anywhere in the home.
  • Which radiators are affected and when the problem occurs.
  • Whether hot water is working normally.
  • The boiler make, model and visible error code, if safely accessible.
  • Any recent work, leaks or other changes you have noticed.

When it is an emergency

A suspected gas escape is not a radiator troubleshooting job. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and follow its instructions. Use 999 for immediate danger.

For a heating enquiry in Guildford, Woking or the wider listed area, contact Pureflo. Call to check availability for a time-sensitive fault. This guide provides general information, not a remote diagnosis or instructions to work on gas equipment.
